Brief Artist/Educator Statement

With this sculpture I am demonstrating my learning of the Romantic Understanding and it’s Cognitive Tools. Again with this sculpture it shows some cognitive tools that are underlay to form a foundation from the Somatic Understanding and the Mythic. The idea of the sculpture is creating a narrative that can tell the story of how I will be using the tools and the framework in a lesson. I have combined my sketch notes with a sculpture to demonstrate how this work for me.

The machine is made of wood  this time moving from wire demonstrates how as I get more comfortable with what I am doing in IE I am willing to commit more to creating a finished sculpture. Wood is familiar to me, so I also see a connection of how my old way of doing things (teaching) is become the new- old. I hope that makes sense but it is hard to find words for what I am trying to explain in images.

I am also interested again in the sounds this machine makes and how it moves. The movement is smother that previous machines I have made. I think that is because the wood moves better and seems to fit better.

I also think it is going to be more complete than the previous sculptures, but not completely finished. I have a clearer picture of how this fits in to my practice, I but am still developing and trying new parts, adding in where I can and experimenting it all the time.

I did not finish it…

I realized something while I was doing it. I need to find some balance in my life. I am trying to do too much and not leaving enough time for me. I am not modeling what a balanced life long learner should look like, and I my anxiety is growing every day. I really need to start to say I am doing enough, say no to things and find the time. I find it interesting that my field study question has also started to effect me. I guess I shouldn’t because in the end it is my teaching practice that benefits from my findings, and explorations. I have decided to show it tomorrow not finished and explain why it is not finished. I will finish it but I will continue on with it in the summer session.
