Artist/Educator Statement

Teacher as Student…

This project was in response to the idea of assessment as learning and how to combine peer and self assessment the becomes both reflective and shows growth, as well as can have a splash of imaginative education thrown in. I worked with a partner on this to help me with collaboration which is another area I feel I need to work on. I tend to get ideas and want to work in a vacuum so I can control everything. This approach does not let me extend my lens and explore areas and thoughts I would not feel comfortable looking at. I think this is true for some students I have had also and putting myself in the role of being the student for an activity I would do allows me to have a different perspective on the project as well as how it should be assessed.

Q: How do we balance our need for curiosity and innovation with our need to protect our environment?

……………………………………………………………………………………………

A: My answer to this question is through a sculpture, a metaphor that demonstrates this struggle. In my process of building this piece I used recycled items to build the submarine and the shark/whale. I showed the assumed importance of the items through colour. I made the item that would cost more ‘gold’ and the ‘fish’ grey. I feel that i demonstrated the struggle I had with this concept, and how the world sees it . I find that the juxtaposition of the two items to be where most of the content is in this conversation. I also have to mention how I tried to show the submarine in a steampunk genre to demonstrate the idea of this being a problem and a concern for a long time.

Because I am interested in peer assessment I would like the class to assess my project on how well it demonstrates this binary opposite and a reason why they think it does or does not work.
